Arbor Day (or Arbour; from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Arbor Day is celebrated in China on March 12 every year.

The 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) marks an important stage in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and in China’s ecological protection drive, and President Xi Jinping has stressed forestry development as a significant measure to fulfill these goals.

“Green mountains and clean water are as good as mountains of gold and silver. To protect the environment is to protect productivity and to improve the environment is to boost productivity.”

---Xi made the remark at the G20 Global Leaders gathering in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, Sept 3, 2016.

“Environmental protection should be given a more prominent position, and we should protect it as we protect our eyes and treat it as seriously as we treat our life.”

---Xi made the remark in Yunnan during a visit from Jan 19 to 21, 2015.

“A good ecological environment is the fairest public product, and the most accessible welfare for the people.”

---Xi made the remark during a group study session attended by members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and environmental scholars, May 24, 2013.
