On December 27, Changzhou Jizi Culture Research Association was officially established in Tianning district. Vice Mayor Chen Zhengchun attended its founding ceremony.

Jizha was the fourth son of Shoumeng, king of the State of Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). It was said that he declined the enthronement three times and was finally made the Duke of Yanling (present-day Changzhou). Jizha was esteemed as a reputable and modest scholar and was, and still is, popularly referred to as Yanling Jizi, or Ji the Master of Yanling. His noble character had a great influence on the conventions of Chinese civilization, and Confucius was said to have written on his gravestone the “Third Man of the Highest Virtue under Heaven.”

Nevertheless, the Changzhou people attribute the root of their humanistic and intellectual civilization to Jizha; they acknowledge him as the forefather of Changzhou culture and continue to observe the set of moral standards that he established.

The Jizi Culture Research Association is an academic group founded by experts and scholars in history with a mission to expand the influence of Changzhou’s Jizi Culture in the country. Wu Linhua has been elected first chairman of the association. The association plans to host a nationwide Jizi culture forum every two years and to enhance the protection of the relics of Jizha in Changzhou.
